2023-2024 Rule Changes / Points of Emphasis

Board 28 Interpreter Mike Volpe reviewed the 2023-2024 Rule Changes and Points of Emphasis during our annual interpretation meetings. For any officials who would like to watch the video that was shown during the intepretation meetings again, it can be downloaded by clicking here. (Note that the video is over 200mb)

Communication with Partners

It is recommended that each official reach out to their partners no later than Sunday of the week that you are scheduled to work together to confirm that you are aware of the game, location and time that you are scheduled to work together. This is especially important when working with newer officials who may need help with directions and any special information about the schools we are working at (where to change, etc…). You should also exchange phone numbers in case you need to communicate during the day of the game for any reason.

MIAA Registration and Background Check Requirement

All officials that are working this season must complete the MIAA Registration and (if necessary) Background Check protocol in order to be listed as an active official with our assignor.  To begin the process, go to www.miaa.net and click on the link on the right hand side of the page for ArbiterSports. The cost for the initial background check is $45 for the first sport, which also covers your MIAA registration. Any additional sports are $10 each, and the fee must be paid before the checks can be completed. NOTE: The background checks need to be completed every three (3) years, so if you have completed it for any sport in the last two (2) years then all you will be required to pay is $10 to register with the MIAA for the year.

NFHS Concussion Course

Once again this year, Board 28 officials will be required to take the NFHS Concussion Course titled “Concussions in Sports – What You Need To Know” prior to being able to officiate during the season, and completed course certificates must be turned into Secretary Bowler. The course is offered for free on the NFHS website at http://nfhslearn.com/?courseID=15000.

Casey Scholarship Donations/Events

Each member of Board 28 is strongly urged to contribute to the Casey Scholarship fund by donating at least $50.00 and/or soliciting at least $50.00 worth of sponsors for the program at the Annual All-Star Games. We are also planning other fundraising activities again this year so we would ask officials to please assist the Board with this fundraiser, as any donation is helpful and appreciated by the student-athletes. Through your efforts, Board 28 has been able to provide multiple $500 scholarships for deserving seniors each year.

"Blow the Whistle on Cancer"

Once again this year, IAABO has committed its interest in supporting this cause. In turn IAABO is encouraging Boards to encourage their membership in participating/supporting the cause. The proposed idea is to ask officials to consider contributing 25% of one game fee during a week to be determined in January 2024. Cancer affects all of us in some way. Please consider donating to this worthy cause.
